Pool Table Refelting in San Diego: When, Why, and What It Really Costs
San Diego's climate is one of the kindest places in the country to own a pool table — mild humidity, no extreme temperature swings, no winter dryness. That climate stretches the life of your felt. But it also means most homeowners wait too long, then wonder why the ball drifts on every shot. Here's the real local guide.
How to know it's time
Felt does not announce its end of life with a tear. It degrades gradually, then suddenly affects play. Six honest signals it is time:
- Visible wear paths down the center of the table where the ball tracks most. Looks faded compared to the edges.
- Pilling — little balls of fuzz that pull off when you brush. Worse on standard felt than Simonis.
- Ball drift on shots that should roll true. Could be leveling, but if the table was leveled within the past year, it is the felt.
- Tears or gouges from cues, jewelry, or the dog jumping up.
- Faded color from sun exposure (very common in SD homes with big windows).
- Sticky or stained patches from spilled drinks, food, or pet accidents.
If two or more of these apply, the table needs refelting, not just cleaning.
San Diego climate matters less than you think
You will read online that humid climates destroy felt faster. True — in Houston or Miami, felt life is closer to 2-4 years versus 3-5 elsewhere. San Diego sits at the friendly end of that spectrum.
Coastal SD properties (La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado) have slightly more humidity year-round, but the marine layer is too mild to meaningfully hurt felt. Inland SD properties (Poway, Escondido, El Cajon) get drier summer air, which is even gentler on cloth.
Bottom line: in San Diego County, you can confidently plan for the upper end of the 3-5 year refelt cycle on standard felt, or 7-10+ years on Simonis. That is unusually generous compared to most US markets.
Standard felt vs. Simonis worsted
The biggest decision in any refelting job. Two real options:
Standard woolen felt. What most residential tables ship with. Affordable, available in 20+ colors, plays well for casual home use. Tends to pill within a year of regular play, fades faster, and lasts 3-5 years before needing replacement.
Simonis worsted cloth (760 or 860). The tournament standard used in pro events worldwide. Plays significantly faster, gives more consistent ball roll, resists pilling almost completely, and lasts 7-10+ years. Costs more upfront. The total cost of ownership over a decade is usually lower because you do not refelt as often.
If you have a quality table (Brunswick, Olhausen, Diamond, Connelly) and play regularly, Simonis is the obvious choice. If you have a budget table or barely play, standard felt is fine.
What goes into a quote
Refelting is not flat-rate by table size alone. Real quote variables:
- Table size. 7ft, 8ft, or 9ft — bigger tables use more cloth and take more time.
- Cloth grade. Standard versus Simonis is the largest single cost driver.
- Color. Common colors (green, blue, burgundy) are usually the same price. Specialty colors (custom, two-tone) can cost more.
- Slate condition. If seams need re-waxing or chips need epoxy, that adds time.
- Rail condition. If cushion rubber is dead and needs replacement, that is a separate add-on (worth doing while the rails are off).
- Location within SD County. Most of San Diego is included in our local service area; outlying areas may have a small zone fee.
For a written quote on your specific table, send 3-4 photos (overall, close-up of bed, rails, any damage spots) to a refelter. Real specialists quote within hours.
How to save money
Two real ways:
Bundle with a move. If you are moving the table anyway, the rails and felt come off as part of disassembly. Adding new felt at that point saves significant labor versus a standalone refelt later.
Bundle with cushion replacement. If the rails are dead too, replacing cushions and felt at the same time is much cheaper than two separate visits. We typically recommend this for tables 15+ years old.
