Pool Table Dimensions by Size
These are the common playing-surface dimensions used for room-size planning. The outer cabinet is larger, but cue clearance is calculated from the playable surface because that is where the cue stroke happens.
| Table Size | Playing Surface | Common Use | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7ft pool table | 39" × 78" | Bar-size / compact home table | Smaller rooms, apartments, casual play |
| 8ft pool table | 44" × 88" | Standard home table | Most home game rooms |
| 9ft pool table | 50" × 100" | Tournament-size table | Large rooms and serious players |
Minimum Room Size for 7ft, 8ft and 9ft Pool Tables
Use this chart for quick planning. A full-size cue is usually 57" to 58". Shorter cues can make tight walls playable, but full clearance is more comfortable.
| Table Size | 48" Cue | 52" Cue | 57" Cue | 58" Cue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7ft table | 11'3" × 14'6" | 11'11" × 15'2" | 12'9" × 16'0" | 12'11" × 16'2" |
| 8ft table | 11'8" × 15'4" | 12'4" × 16'0" | 13'2" × 16'10" | 13'4" × 17'0" |
| 9ft table | 12'2" × 16'4" | 12'10" × 17'0" | 13'8" × 17'10" | 13'10" × 18'0" |
Formula used: playing surface length/width plus cue length on both sides. Add extra space for seating, cue racks, posts, bar tops or furniture.
Quick Answers About Pool Table Room Dimensions
What is the standard billiard table size?
The most common home sizes are 7ft, 8ft and 9ft. A 7ft table has a 39" × 78" playing surface, an 8ft table has a 44" × 88" playing surface, and a 9ft table has a 50" × 100" playing surface.
How much room do you need for a pool table?
With a 57" cue, plan for about 12'9" × 16'0" for a 7ft table, 13'2" × 16'10" for an 8ft table, and 13'8" × 17'10" for a 9ft table.
Can a pool table fit in a small room?
Yes, but the table size and cue length matter. A 7ft table with 48" short cues can work in tighter rooms. If the calculator says the fit is tight, send us the room dimensions before buying the table.
What are 8 ft pool table dimensions?
A standard 8ft pool table has a 44" × 88" playing surface. For full cue clearance with a 57" cue, use a minimum room size of about 13'2" × 16'10".
