Pool Table Maintenance: Keep Your Table Playing Perfect
A pool table is a long-term investment. With basic maintenance, yours will play perfectly for decades. Here's what to do, and what to leave to the pros.
1. Weekly: Brush the Felt
Use a pool table brush (not a lint roller or vacuum) to sweep the felt after every few sessions. Brush in one direction, from the head of the table toward the foot. This removes chalk dust, fibers, and debris that can slow the balls and wear the cloth prematurely. Never use household cleaners on felt.
2. Monthly: Clean the Balls
Dirty balls transfer grime to the felt. Wash your ball set monthly with warm water and mild dish soap, or use a specialized ball cleaner. Dry thoroughly before playing. This simple step extends felt life significantly.
3. Every 6 Months: Check Level
Place a ball in the center of the table and watch it. If it drifts consistently in one direction, the table needs re-leveling. This is normal; houses settle, floors shift, and temperature changes can affect the frame. A machinist's level on the slate is the definitive test. Re-leveling is quick for a pro ($75–$150).
4. Every 3–5 Years: Consider Refelting
Felt doesn't last forever. Signs it's time: visible wear paths, thin spots, pilling, or the ball slows noticeably in certain areas. Heavy use (daily play) might require refelting every 2–3 years. Light home use can stretch to 5–8 years. When it's time, you get to pick a new color; think of it as a table refresh.
5. When to Call a Professional
Call a pro for: re-leveling (requires precision tools), refelting (improper stretching ruins the playing surface), cushion replacement (requires specific adhesives and techniques), any repair involving the slate, and any move, even across the room. Pool tables are too heavy and precise for DIY on structural work.
